Where we stayed: Alcala de las Gazules
The town has a population of about 5000. It is situated
on top of a hill where it was built centuries ago to enable the
inhabitants to defend themselves from the invading moors. Since
there is no longer a need for defense, the town has expanded downwards
and outwards. The character of the original city is beautiffuly
maintained. The homes are all painted white, the streets are narrow
cobblestone and very steep.
The roads in and out of the city are steep and winding,
but well-maintained.
